Kalabi Privacy Policy

Kalabi works without an account, and every learning feature is available without one. You can optionally sign in with a Kalabi account to back up your learning progress to the cloud, as described below. We do not sell personal information, show advertising, track you across apps or websites, or use advertising SDKs. Kalabi also collects anonymous usage and crash data to improve the app, as described below, and you can turn this off at any time.
Information stored on your device
Your learning progress, review history, custom vocabulary lists, preferences, and related study data are stored locally on your device. Unless you sign in to a Kalabi account and use cloud backup (described next), Kalabi does not upload this information to us. If you export a backup file, you choose where that file is saved or shared.
Anonymous usage and crash data
Unless you turn it off, Kalabi sends anonymous usage events to PostHog (hosted in the United States). These are simple counts such as the app being opened, onboarding being completed, a learning, review, or flashcard session starting or finishing, how you rated a review (again, hard, good, or easy), and a pronunciation being played. Kalabi also sends crash and error reports to Sentry (hosted in the European Union), containing technical details such as the error message, the app version, and the device model and operating system version.
This data is identified only by a random identifier generated by the app. Crash reports carry the same random identifier as usage events so that a problem can be matched to what led to it. It is not linked to your name, email address, or any account, and Kalabi does not send your IP address, advertising identifier, the words or text you enter, your vocabulary lists, or your study content. We use it only to understand how the app is used and to fix problems, and we do not use it for advertising, sell it, or share it with anyone other than PostHog and Sentry, which process it on our behalf.
Kalabi account and optional cloud backup
Signing in is optional. A Kalabi account is the same account used on the Kalabi website (kalabi.ai), and you sign in on that website, which the app opens in Apple's secure sign-in sheet; the app itself never sees your password. If you use an email and password, our authentication provider stores the password in hashed form. If you choose Sign in with Apple, Apple shares your email address (or a private relay address if you choose to hide it) and, the first time, your name. If you choose Google, Google shares your email address and basic profile details, such as your name. We use this information to run your account, to sign you in, and to let you manage or delete it.
While you are signed in, the Kalabi app uploads a copy of your learning data from your device to your account as a cloud backup. This includes your learning progress, review history, custom vocabulary lists, and related study records. The backup is one-way: the app only uploads, and it never downloads or replaces the learning data stored on your device. Signing out stops further uploads but does not delete data that was already backed up; deleting your account does.
Account and backup data is stored with our hosting provider, Supabase, which processes it on our behalf. We use it only to provide your account and backup. We do not use it for advertising, sell it, or share it with anyone else. The anonymous usage and crash data described above is separate: it is not linked to your account or its email address.
Deleting your account
You can permanently delete your Kalabi account at any time. In the Kalabi app, open Settings, then Account, and choose “Delete account”; this opens kalabi.ai/account/delete in your browser, where you confirm with your password, or, if you signed up with Apple or Google, by signing in with Apple or Google again and typing your email address, and then type DELETE. Deleting your account permanently removes your Kalabi profile, documents, media, and your cloud backup, and it cannot be undone. Learning data stored on your device is not erased; you can remove it by resetting learning data in the app or deleting the app. If you cannot use the app or website, email us at the address below and we will help.
Network access and external services
Kalabi includes its core lessons, audio, and study data for offline use. If optional content is not available locally, the app may request public character-stroke data from the jsDelivr content delivery network. Links to additional lessons may open kalabi.ai in your browser. If you sign in, the app also communicates with our account and backup service. These services may receive standard technical request information such as an IP address and browser or device details under their own privacy practices. Kalabi does not attach your learning history, custom lists, name, email address, or advertising identifier to those requests.
Permissions
Kalabi does not require location, contacts, camera, microphone, photo-library, health, or tracking permission for its normal learning features.
Your choices
You can turn off anonymous usage and crash data at any time in Kalabi under Settings, then Privacy, by switching off “Share anonymous usage data.” Once it is off, Kalabi stops sending this data. You can sign out at any time to stop cloud backup, and you can delete your account and its cloud backup as described above. You can reset learning data from within the app or remove locally stored data by deleting the app. You can also export a backup before doing so.
Children's privacy
Kalabi does not knowingly collect personal information from children or other users. If you believe personal information has been provided to us, contact us so we can investigate.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when Kalabi's features or legal obligations change. The effective date above will identify the latest version.
